"John Wick: Chapter 4" officially opened with a bow at its London premiere on Monday night, with the social media reactions embargo lifted during the premiere.

The fourth entry follows on from the conclusion of "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum," which saw Keanu Reeves' famous assassin take a tumble from atop the Continental Hotel after being betrayed by his ally Winston (Ian McShane). In all likelihood, Wick lives. "Chapter 4" uncovers the infamous pariah traveling the globe to free himself from the oppression of the devious, cutthroat High Table.

The critical darling action series has received a lot of praise from the first round of reviews, especially for its deep pool of sparring partners which include Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Marko Zazor, Scott Adkins and Rina Sawayama. Another central topic of opinion is the film's runtime, which clocks in at 2 hours and 49 minutes -38 minutes more than the previous installment's.

Los Angeles Times critic Katie Walsh liked the film with her praise of its design and visuals, calling it an improvement over other blockbusters from franchises. The critic also noted about one element she didn't like about it: "Because it's dumb."

Collider Editor-in-Chief Steven Weintraub had nothing but praise for the film, indicating that Reeves gets up to some shady things using a dragon's breath shotgun.

CinemaBlend Critic Eric Eisenberg expressed some reservations regarding the film's lengthy runtime. But he states that the film "earns it" with "smart timing" and some strong elements of the set.

John Wick: Chapter 4 director and franchise creator Chad Stahelski explains why he would like to take a break from the series before working on the next installment. Stahelski started his career working in Hollywood by working as a stuntman prior to teaming up with star Keanu Reeves on the 2014 film John Wick. Stahelski will co-direct the film with David Leitch, before solely managing the next three sequels after John Wick was a surprise financial and critical success.

Interview with the film company /Film, Stahelski speaks about what the future holds for the action series prior to John Wick: Chapter 4's theatrical release. He says he thinks he should take a break from the franchise prior to continuing the Wick story. However, the director has indicated the possibility of not directing a John Wick 5 film, telling the press, "I'm always saying, 'This is my last one and this won't happen again.' So, I'll tell you now: This is my last one." In terms of why he believes that a break is needed, Stahelski says:

While Stahelski hopes to step away from John Wick's reluctant adventure through the criminal underworld The John Wick franchise is scheduled to grow with the Ana de Armas-led spin-off, Ballerina. The story is set in the time between John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina explores the story of de Armas' Rooney, who embarks on her own quest for revenge against the murderers of her family. In  John Wick Chapter 4 , de Armas is taking over the role of Unity Phelan, Reeves, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick and Anjelica Huston are all set to take on roles they played in previous installments of the series.

Following his efforts on John Wick: Chapter 4 and the other chapters of the series, Stahelski is set to apply his directing talents to new realms outside of the thrilling gunplay Reeves' master assassin. The year 2021 is when Stahelski was tapped by the company to create a film adaptation of Ghosts of Tsushima the most popular 2020 PlayStation video game where Samurai fights for the island of Tsushima in the first Mongol invasion of Japan. The director is also expected to create a new version in the Highlander franchise in 2021, with Stahelski said he was planning his take on the battle between immortals being a trilogy of films.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is one of 2023's most eagerly anticipated films of 2023. So, even though there could be some disappointment over the possibility of a discontinuation between the installments, it's clear Stahelski's reasons could prove beneficial to future films. Additionally, with the director's upcoming projects converting swords with guns, the lessons that Stahelski teaches with Ghosts of Tsushima and Highlander will allow for more riveting fights in future films.
